Firefox was having trouble on windows 8.1. I had been using it for about a year, getting regular updates. Something went wrong, about the profile being bad. I uninstalled Firefox, deleted any Firefox dirs, rebooted. Now when I try to reinstall, it hangs. I know now that I probably didn't go through the proper steps to resolve the profile issue but now I just want to know what to do so I can reinstall successfully. Is there something else I need to remove? Thanks

Follow instructions here, I would suggest deletion of entire mozilla folder in appdata.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data

If you want to save bookmarks and passwords, copy out relevant files before deletion.

Thank you, but I have already done that.

This is very strange.

I can only offer two suggestions independent of each other:

1. try download the full package here ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/36.0.1/win32/en-US/ and try to install it.

2. try download a zip package, since it needs no installation, it may pass your problem, unfortunately, mozilla only offers zip for beta and nightly, not released version. ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/candidates/37.0b3-candidates/build1/

The exe seems to hang and if I try to delete the download file, it says its being used by 7z setup SFX 32 bit. ( Firefox Setup 36.0.1.exe). So I kill the 7z setup, delete the file and try again. Tried rebooting between. No difference. I'm not sure which files to pull down for your 2nd suggestion.

This problem has been solved. It turns out it was a wireless modem issue. I had to change the Radio broadcast channel from Auto Detect to 1. It was strange because all of my other wireless connections were working IPhone, Netflix, friend's IPAD, etc. Once I connected the Ethernet cable to my pc/modem, it worked, so it was a wireless connection issue from my laptop. I'm sure the initial suggestion would have fixed it. It was just bad timing of a different problem. Thanks! I have Firefox back!
