Something changed. The tray disappeared. The only way I seem to be able to leave Firefox is to close it.

You first could check that Firefox is not in its full screen view where the Windows Taskbar is hidden. The F11 key switches between regular and full screen views.

If Firefox hides the Windows Taskbar in regular view, a file that stores Firefox windows dimensions may have become corrupted. If you aren't able to resize the window manually, you can remove that file to have Firefox return to its original size.

To try to resize manually:

Press Alt+Spacebar to display the control menu for the Firefox window, then click Size (or press S) and press the down arrow once and then the up arrow once. This usually will move the lower border of the Firefox Window up to the visible area of the screen. If it isn't visible, try pressing the up arrow numerous times, or holding it down for a while. To finish the size change, press Enter.

If the window is maximized, then Size is grayed out. That's normal, and this method won't help.

To remove the settings file:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like xulstore.old. If you see a file named localstore.rdf, rename that one to localstore.old.

Start Firefox back up again. Do windows display normally again?

You can turn on missing bars (menu bar, bookmarks toolbar) using the Toolbar list, which you can show using any of the following:

  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar, or right-click the "+" button on the tab bar
  • tap the Alt key to activate the classic menu bar, then View > Toolbars
  • on the Customize tab, use the "Show/Hide Toolbar" button (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

Any improvement?
