accidently clicked 'save as bookmarks toolbar folder' while pointing to a regular 'downlist folder'.
So, all THOSE items jumped up onto my toolbar AND 'disappeared' all 4 rows that I saved up there for years - MUST RECOVER. well, after I noticed the bookmarks were changed, I deleted them one-at-a-time, hoping the 4 rows of 'good old ones' might slide back in behind them. No Dice. So, when I mis-clicked 'save as bookmarks toolbar folder' while in a regular downlist bookmarks listing, Just Where Exactly did my original 4 lines of 'good old ones' that have been up on the toolbar get 'disappeared' to. They must still be SOMEwhere. right ?

Ah-HA. I have SOLVED the mystery of the 'missing bookmarks toolbar buttons'. I went to my Firefox add-ons page, to dis-able or delete the 'roomy bookmarks toolbar' extension, that I thought was causing the problem and to see if that would either bring back my 'good old toolbar listings', or at least let me start rebuilding a new one from scratch, even on a single line. Well, what do I find in my add-ons extensions list BESIDES the 'roomy'? Another extension called 'save as bookmarks toolbar folder'. I don't know how it got onto my add-ons list, since I had never even heard of it till this week's problem, but, as soon as I deleted it and re-started Firefox, all of my 4 lines of 'good old bookmarks toolbar buttons' were back just fine. One add-on CAN cause blocking of another. And you might never even know it was happening.

Bookmark / History Backups
Type about:support<Enter> in the address bar.
Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Enter the bookmarkbackups folder. This is where Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks. Look for the jsonlz4 file you want to restore (check the time / date / size). Right click on that file and select Copy. Now go back to the profile folder where you started. Rename the file places.sqlite by adding .old to it. Now right click in the folder and select Paste. The file you just pasted here, rename it to places.sqlite. After you are done, restart Firefox.
I don't have such a menu item, it may be something added by an add-on.
Firefox's Library dialog has an Undo item on the menu, but I don't know whether it would work in this case. If you want to try it, you would need to do it BEFORE exiting out of Firefox.
To call up the dialog, either:
- Ctrl+Shift+b
- "Show All Bookmarks"
Then on the menu bar in the dialog, Undo appears on the Organize menu. Depending on what changes you have made since the incident, you may need to run it several times.
Well, NO. I can tell that renaming the jsoniz4 file DID work because all of the icons with my bookmarks are changed to plain white squares and when I click on any of one of them, it goes fine and 're-acquires' it's icon. BUT, the bookmarks toolbar at the top is still a blank blue space where 4 lines of buttons used to be. THEY did not return with the re-naming. Roomy Bookmarks Toolbar 1.4.9.1 is the add-on extension that I have running. Any thoughts on where else to find my old toolbar buttons ?
How long ago did the deletion occur? Firefox keeps several backups and you might need to restore an older one.
Here's the rub: there's no way to merge different backups, so restoring one from last week will drop out the ones added since then. If you want to keep an importable copy of what you see now, you can do the optional steps here:
- (Optional) Export bookmarks: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
- Restore backup: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
- (Optional) Import bookmarks: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
- (Optional) Reorganize the imported bookmarks into logical locations (they might be in an Imported Bookmarks folder on the menu or in Unsorted bookmarks)
You can check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
- "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
- View > Toolbars
Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar - Right-click empty toolbar area
Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
- "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
- check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
- if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
- if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
- if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup

That was very good work. Well Done.
It’s very sad, but many of the software down-loaders / installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well. You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print. You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does. From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.
