how do i make a change from bell.net to gmail.com for my e mail addres on thunderbird?

You can add a new mail address for Gmail via File -> New -> Existing mail account. You can see and configure the different addresses via Tools -> Account Settings. Here you can configure your old account not to check for new mail anymore or remove it when you have no more use for it and your old mail.
