Firefox had been working fine. However, now when I select the desktop shortcut and when I have tried the Application file in the Mozilla Firefox folder on my hard drive, the Windows 7 'rotating circle briefly appears but then disappears and Firefox fails to load. No error message is displayed. I have Avast Premier as my anti-virus programme. I can access Internet Explorer, email and wifi. Thanks

You can check in the the Windows Control Panel if you can find "NVIDIA Network Access Manager" or "NVIDIA ForceWare Network Access Manager" and uninstall this software.

Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift (Mac: Options) key to see if that helps.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.
