On checking the history icon in the dropdown box of the toolbar, I find a number of entries to websites and pages which I do not recall visiting. Why ???

I reviewed my browser History using the History icon in the drop down menu on the toolbar and was a little concerned that there were history entries to websites and pages that I am certain I have never visited. I don't believe anyone else that may have used my PC would have done so either and I am a little concerned as to whether I have a security problem. Is this history specific to the Firefox browser and my PC ? If so, is it possible for someone to be remotely accessing the Internet through my browser.? Some of the entries were accessing the admin on my router, which I have done myself in the past but not recently. I cannot find any date/time stamp on the entries so have no way of knowing when they occurred.

This sounds like there may be a potential security threat that you should look into for sure.

First off, you can scan your system for infections using these free tools that can help to detect issues that your antivirus software has missed:

You should also consider doing the following:

  • Ensure that no other users are accessing these sites, since you are not the sole user
  • Change your internet password
  • Change your router username and password
  • Avoid access websites with sensitive information
  • Avoid leaving your computer active while not in use
  • Change website account passwords (if required)

Please let us know if the scan(s) for infections detect any issues.

When clicking a link, sometimes you are re-directed.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Many thanks for your advice and guidance everyone. It would appear that I have been infected by malware which I now believe has been removed. I had already changed account and router passwords but will probably do again just to make sure.

Glad to hear that your problem has been solved. Hopefully the issue stays away for good and will not come back. Nobody likes malware.
