Common web pages like bing.com, google.com, microsoft.com all load in the Opera and Internet Explorer 9 web browsers, but will not load, and give the message "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at google.com" or similar.

"ping bing.com" or "ping google.com" work in a command window, but not "ping microsoft.com". Our internet connection is pretty slow, and the ping commands have a round trip time of 2000ms.

Does Firefox have a timeout for response that can be adjusted?

I have gone through all the suggestions at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-problems-connecting-websites-after-updating, including disabling ipv6 for dns and disabling prefetch, with no change.

I also completely uninstalled, and reinstalled after deleting the profiles, and created a new profile, with no change. Firefox was installed from "Firefox Setup 43.0.1.exe"

I can't see any way to add the troubleshooting information. The manual add instructions don't seem to apply, sorry. Computer is a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Check the date and time and time zone in the clock on your computer: (double) click the clock icon on the Windows Taskbar.

What security software do you have?

There is security software like Avast and Kaspersky and BitDefender and ESET that intercepts secure connections and sends their own certificate or that incorporates special web shielding features that can block content.

Check out why the site is untrusted and click Advanced to expand this section to see extra details. If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source. Click the "Add Exception" button to inspect the certificate in the Certificate Viewer.

If you can't inspect the certificate via the "Add Exception" button then try this:

Open the "Add Security Exception" window by pasting this chrome URL in the Firefox location/address bar and check the certificate:

  • chrome://pippki/content/exceptionDialog.xul

In the location field of this window type or paste the URL of the website with the https:// protocol prefix (https://xxx.xxx).

  • retrieve the certificate via the "Get certificate" button
  • click the "View..." button to inspect the certificate in the Certificate Viewer

You can inspect details like the issuer and the certificate chain in the Details tab of the Certificate Viewer. Check out who is the issuer of the certificate. If necessary then please attach a screenshot that shows the Certificate Viewer with the issuer.
