I can reveive, I can send Follow-ups to newsgroups, but I can't send emails since last week
Not quite sure when this began: last Friday or perhaps last Thursday. Every time I try to send an email with Thunderbird 45.4.0 it tells it cannot authenticate - usually with smtp, sometimes with mail. Thunderbird works fine with newsgroups. I spent ages on the phone with my server on Saturday - we deleted my account and installed a new one with a new password, but it still doesn't work. One further oddity, on Saturday three test messages to myself that it said it couldn't send because it couldn't authenticate smtp.clubtelco.com actually turned up in my Inbox about 20 minutes later, although they did not appear in my Sent box. I seem to be able to send email using Mac's Mail program, but I much prefer Thunderbird that I have been using ever since Netscape stopped.

I finally got a phone call from a Mozilla man just as I was about to go out. He promised someone would phone me at 8am this morning but nobody did. The number he gave me: 1800 626 749 gets me a message that "this number is unavailable".
It seems that no help is forthcoming. It is very annoying having to use webmail instead of a dedicated program.
Why does each post have "solved the problem" next to it when the problem is not solved?

That was a scam. Mozilla doesn't call users. This forum is the official Thunderbird support venue. There is no phone support for Thunderbird.

I'm not sure what you mean. In any case, once your problem is solved, you can mark a post as the 'Solution'.
Wrt your problem, see https://support.mozilla.org/kb/cannot-send-messages
Unfortunately, Thunderbird is still not working properly. I thought I'd solved it when I discovered the modem had my password too and was using the old one, but changing it didn't help. What is odd is that it works perfectly with Usenet newsgroups and Firefox works perfectly with Internet, but I still can't send emails using Thunderbird and even receiving them is chancy.

What exactly prevents you from sending messages?
