An automatic update requires a reboot of my computer. However, it says the same however many times I reboot. I cannot re-install Thunderbird either - it just gives the same pop up message that I must rteboot to finish a previous update. Does anyone know how I can fix this please? I cannot start the program or reinstall it. Thank you.

Close TB. Goto Tb program folder. Delete active-update.xml, updates.xml and the "updates" folder. Start TB, try to update.

Thank you Zenos. I cannot open TB in order to do anything at all, let alone close it. I have deleted the files and the folder previously, but it makes no difference. I cannot uninstall the program and I cannot reinstall the latest version over the top. In each case it tells me my computer must be shut down in order to complete a previous update.

How do you know this message is related to Thunderbird in the first place? Normally the computer does not need to be restarted for a Thunderbird update to complete.

Hello Christ1, I guess because the pop-up only appears when I try to run Thunderbird. I went to uninstall the program as well, and the same pop-up appeared there. The problem is fixed now. I used Total Uninstall to remove the program and then it allowed me to reinstall the latest version. It now opens OK and my profiles and emails are intact. Thank you all for your suggestions.
