When a platform is no longer supported then this is usually because the OS doesn't support specific API that Firefox uses for recently added features. Users on the XP and Vista platform will be switched automatically to the ESR release and you can keep using a supported Firefox version until ESR switches to ESR 59 in about a year. There is also the issue that you need a processor that has SSE2 support.

It was not a matter of if but when as it was going to happen.

You can still use the Firefox 52 ESR which is separate from the now old 52.0 Release as 53.0 is current Release.

A version on ESR channel generally gets eight updates so 52.8.0esr will be out when Firefox 60 is Released in a year. By that time Mozilla will have supported the EOL WinXP and Vista for two years past when Chrome dropped support.

Supporting XP is actually become quite a problem for our releng teams in that data center testing hardware doesn't support XP anymore. So for example we currently use AWS for most of our testing, but have XP tests running on old hardware we have to maintain ourselves in a data center. It's issues like this that push us to move XP out to an extended support release where we can decommission most of our automated testing associated with it.

If Vista was actually decent then there may not have been so many still using WinXP instead even three years past EOL. The so call hack for security updates meant for cash registers and ATM's does not really count.

Enough is enough! The same old history, a Windows XP SP3 computer with shockingly expensive hardware and software which are not able to work on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 and a last desperate try to update the browser comes with:

The computer is relatively safe because mostly is disconnected from any network, there are routers and firewall which only allow to access to a couple of specific whitelisted services, addresses, ports and sites but anyway, I am not able to update Firefox since some months ago. Then I guess I have to move on and, as update the OS is not an option, I would like to know what are the alternatives to Firefox. Is there any safe, reliable, open source browser which currently supports Windows XP SP3?

I totally understand your frustration, and I wish I could tell you something different than the :   'You can still use the ESR Firefox version till mid 2018'. Unfortunately I can only come up with this :
