I am trying to attach my public key to a message to send to a friend. I am clicking the "attach public key" button and the message is unencrypted. When I push send, I'm getting the error message, "error - key extraction command failed." How can I resolve this problem and send my public key?

Is this something to do with the use of Enigmail? If so you will need to contact their support https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/support
