Ever since the last update, my browser has been really slow at random times.

  • youtube videos are choppy/laggy, especially if I move the cursor while the video is playingor if I try to press the play/pause button of the settings button, it lags/hangs up
  • scrolling lags as well
  • sometimes on reddit and othwer imageboards, it takes forever for gifs or images to load

Clearing cache does not fix this, I end up closing firefox and clearing cache multiple times throughout the day and this is time consuming

Sounds like the computers CPU is being overworked.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

The CPU isn't being overworked, firefox takes up about 350,000k-450,000k and when only firefox is running, my CPU is at anywhere from 13%-25% I wouldn't think that would mean the CPU is overworked.

I just ran it in safemode with no difference, like I said before, it's hard to tell because the lagging happens at random times. I'll switch it to safe mode next time it is having a lagging episode.

I tried switching to 64bit mode, so hopefully this fixes it. I had switched to 32bit mode because flash stopped working several months ago, and this lagging problem occured after the update for the 32bit (52.3) was installed. Could 32bit ESR version have caused the problem?

No way to tell unless you install a different Firefox.

Yeah so I i have been using 64 bit and have the same problems. I ran it in safe mode when there was lagging when tryign to pause and play youtube videos and the problem didn't occur in safe mode. Where do I from here?

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar. Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

In Firefox 55, the hardware acceleration setting moved from the Advanced panel General tab to the General panel, under the new Performance section. You first have to UNcheck the "Use recommended performance settings" checkbox to see the "Use hardware acceleration when available" setting.
