I recently reinstalled Mozilla and I can't drag and drop new bookmarks, nor can I import my old bookmarks from an HTML file. If I drag and drop a tab to the bookmarks area, it just opens a new browser window.

I have no add-ons installed, I only use AdBlocker, have been for years. I've restarted in safe mode, same thing.

When I click import from HTML in the Library, they appear in the lefthand column in a folder called Bookmarks toolbar. I just can't drag them to the browser toolbar, where they used to be.

I had reinstalled it a couple of times and had the same issue. Third time I got some random message saying something along the lines of "firefox needs to be refreshed do you want to do it now" I just clicked refresh before I could read the message out of habit. It now works fine.

Refresh removes add-ons and resets many settings.

As long as it works. Please flag your https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1173176#answer-1001106 response as Solved Problem.

BTW; what about the other programs you spoke of?

apparently it seems to have been just a mozilla issue. I've never used chrome before and I assumed dragging and dropping bookmarks would be the same.

Apparently, with chrome, you need to drag it from the address bar to the bookmark tab, not the actual opened tab to the bookmark bar.

have no idea with edge, it's crap anyway.

This is way bizarre. Firefox just randomly asked me if I want to refresh it.

How   ?   Where   ?

....... and I'm still waiting for an answer ........ (?)

I told you, I just clicked refresh out of habit before getting a chance to read the notification. I don't know why that happened.

If Firefox thinks it is slow it will ask about doing a refresh.

The reason I kept asking :   Firefox shouldn't be doing that.

@cutkiller and F redMcD :

Before you guys even mentioned 'Refresh', I hinted at doing one :

"So far you've done everything in the book (except Refresh  ? ....... ) "

I'm curious:

Did you verify that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" was positioned on the Bookmarks Toolbar? If that isn't the case then you can't drag a bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.
