Have been using TBird for > 6 years. 3 days ago it went belly up as per: Receiving mail is fine. Send mail always fails.

Connects fine as in "Connected to smtp.googlemail.com..."
Green progress bar is at 100%
Then we wait to get a timeout as:
 "Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP)
  smtp.googlemail.com timed out. Try again.

Settings. Port 587, Normal password, SSL/TLS

I have tried various permutations of security and port settings as suggested in various other threads associated with this error, always with Normal passwords. Note that these threads implied they had no answer too.

If you're using port 587, the security should be STARTTLS. SSL/TLS works on port 465. The recommended authentication is OAuth2, together with allowing 'less-secure apps'. If you applied 2-step verification, the authentication has to be either OAuth2 or with an app password.
