Dragging an .png or .gif on my desktop downloads them without file-suffix and changes the standard application to illustrator instead of preview

more options

Since I downloaded the new Firefox 56 on Mac 10.11.6 El Capitan I have problems downloading .gif and .png files via drag-and-drop.

Everytime I drag a picture with these file-suffixes they appear without a suffix on my desktop. I can manually add the suffix and the file is functional again. In Addition everytime I download a .png or .gif this way my standard application for opening these files and other picture files like .jpg changes from "preview" to "adobe illustrator" and I have to manually change it back to "preview".

When I download a .jpg file per drag-and-drop this error does not occur.

I already cleared my cache and cookies and als deactivated all firefox addons but the error stays the same.

Try this : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cant-download-or-save-files it has nothing to do with drag and drop though. What are you using that enabled you to drag and drop by downloading ? I Have never seen or heard of this.

Maybe you misunderstand me, I have no general problem that prohibits me to download files. Downloading in general works fine.

I am not using special tools to drag and drop. The usual way I use to download/copy images is to leftclick on an image, pull the mouse off the firefox window and release the button over the desktop. This way I download most image files instead of rightclicking and using the "save as"-function.

seems to be a correlation, I have the same problem too and I don't have this behaviour with Chrome!
