Sync runs all the time when Firefox is running.

  • Upon launch Sync contacts the Sync server for new or changed data from other devices that are connected to that Firefox Account.
  • Save a new bookmark, that change is sent to the server immediately.
  • Same when the user re-arranges a bookmark or two.
  • Re-arrange multiple bookmarks in one sitting and Sync will "see that" and may switch to "batch sends"; as with stopping the movement of bookmarks for over 30 to 60 seconds. Don't know the "time" spec for that. That is my own observation of Sync when I was playing with it with separate Profiles open and tiled in different windows. Keep in mind that Sync works per Firefox Profile, not per Firefox installation or per device.
  • Sync also contacts the server as Firefox is being closed by the user, to send the last open Tabs for the "Sync Tabs" feature.
  • And if Firefox crashes or the user "kills the firefox.exe process the "shut down procedure" Sync event won't be sent; AND Firefox could lose some data when some "open while running" files might be lost. But that isn't as bad as in the past, Mozilla has been adding "temporary while Firefox is open files" so as the user has a lessened risk of losing data. Next time Firefox is launched "it sees" those temporary files and "deals with them" so that the data is saved in the "permanent file" they are associated with.
  • Not sure how Sync deals with that "wasn't gracefully closed" situation.

The "Sync on demand" / manual Sync button was removed from the UI when the Synced Tabs feature was added to Sync. Now you are either Connected or Disconnected.

Other than cursor hover over the Synced Tabs button to see the Date:Time of the last Sync event per device, there is no visual indicator to show the user that Sync is working. And I'm not sure that Date"Time still works; I haven't the Profiles where I have Sync activated in quite awhile. I haven't had a real need for Sync for a real long time (like 6 years now). I just "play" with it so I can help other Firefox users with their questions about Sync; using one PC with multiple Profile setup with Sync connected.
