Thunderbird - Unable to send email - Login to server smtp.verizon.net failed - asks me to enter password
Suddenly this morning I can't send email, though I can receive. Error comes up "Login to server smtp.verizon.net failed." Port is 465, connection security is SSL/TLS. I had Verizon email, which was acquired by AOL, but have had no problems for more than a year. Also have a gmail account which will not send. If I go to the AOL site, I can send email on both accounts, but I much prefer to use Thunderbird.
Following are steps I tried, but still get the same error: 1. Checked saved password and it is correct. 2. Entered password into login box 3. Deleted the account, entered a new one, with my current password 4. Restored my account from a month ago 5. Turned off all virus/firewall protection
Very frustrated, and would appreciate any help.

Verizon has moved to AOL email servers. Check with Verizon about the required server settings, and post them here.
Thanks for replying. I migrated to AOL more than a year ago and have had no problems until suddenly this morning. Server settings are: smtp.verizon.net, Port is 465, connection security SSL/TLS. I am sure of my password, and even checked the saved password in Thunderbird which is the same. However, even if I enter it into the error box, it comes up with the same error. Is there any further info that would be helpful for you? THanks.
Whenever this happens, try to think "this should not be caused by Thunderbird" first. Usually this indicates a server issue, so check your ISP’s or mail provider’s service stats first. (Additionally, it’s not a bad idea to set up another email client to verify SMTP or other server issues.)
Then have a look at the Cannot send messages article to see if anything is valid. Most often, it’s an issue with either Thunderbird or security / antivirus software that updated recently (which can be checked in the application logs), so make sure that software recognizes Thunderbird as a legitimate app for outgoing traffic.
If you are sure the latter is fine, you may need to change the servers to what’s listed here or here, or (preferably) add those servers to TB for testing first without editing any existing settings and select them for the appropriate account afterwards. Use the bottom of the left pane in the Account settings to add SMTP servers. You may need to change/add the incoming server too.
