change default laptop camera for external webcam

I have a toshiba laptop with internal cam. This is not ideal for chatting and wish to use webcam. How do I make the latter my default camera.

Here's a suggestion:

Plug in the external web cam, and let the operating system "acquire it", then open Firefox.

Or start Firefox if you want to plug in the web cam when Firefox is already running.
