I am switching from Outlook as it's re-down loading thousands of old emails for no reason, a MS issue from some update. So I setup a new Thunderbird email client and when I put in PW for one of my email accounts it downloaded 800 old emails. My other email account has thousands that I don't need as I have them to backedup in Outlook, and it will take along time to download all of them, any way around it?

If you move the unwanted messages to a separate folder via webmail access, then set up the account as IMAP in TB, just choose to not subscribe to that folder. Right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe, to select which folders to download.

You could also choose which folders to download entire messages through the Synchronization & Storage/Message Synchronizing settings in Tools/Account Settings for the account. In that case, just the message headers will be downloaded,
