I followed the instructions on downloading my profile from the "old" PC and loaded the profile wb7rle60.default on to a USB stick and then went to the new PC and followed the instructions to download this profile. The profile is on the new PC along with the new defaults when I set up Thunderbird. If I use the "new" default it will load TB but asks me to set up from scratch so if I go into profile manager and set the wb7rle60 profile it will not load and brings up the error message as above. If I check the contents of the wb7rle60 file on both the old and new PC's they match but I cannot launch TB. My old PC is 32 bit and new is 64 bit but all info on website shows that this should not be a problem. If I cannot transfer profiles is there a way to access my old messages and address book by another method without resorting to a highly technical fix

What version of Thunderbird were you using on old PC? Was it Windows 32 bit version 60.9.0 ?

What version of Thunderbird are you using on new PC? What did you download and install: Was it Windows 32 bit version 68.1.1 ? Was it Windows 64 bit version 68.1.1 ?

On new PC: In the wb7rle60.default profile folder, locate the 'compatibility.ini' file. Open using Notepad either post an image showing contents or copy paste contents into this forum post a reply text box.

Im Appdata/Thunderbird/Profiles folder: Do you see a profile called '*.default release' ?

Use the profile manager to point Thunderbird to the wb7rle60.default profile you copied over from the old computer. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Use_the_Profile_Manager_to_move_your_profile

Then use the profile manager to start Thunderbird with the wb7rle60.default profile.

Tried this and will not load just comes up with the error message but will load with the new profile but is just a bare bones without my existing profile.

Copy the "contents" of the old profile folder into the new profile folder. There are some quirks in the v68 with regard to downgraded protection and single profiles per install that we are trying to come to terms with. But at this time I would think putting your old contents into the new profile should "just work" once you have done it.

Had already tried this but did a retry and still will not load. It is as though TB will not recognise this profile. I did see somewhere that this error message needs clearing by using another method but cannot find anything in the support forum or online so hoping that somebody has an idea otherwise I will have to ditch TB and use another although I am still unsure how to back up all my email files so that I can access them.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this post and even though none of the suggestions solved the problem I did manage to resolve it in the end. I had previously tried all the suggestions yet TB would not use the transferred profile and either did not load or loaded with the "new" profile generated at each set up but in the end I started TB in its "safe mode"and used profile manager to select the "old" transferred profile and it worked. I don't know why or how this worked but it did and I have left all the other profiles in place and just use the one I highlighted. I realize that I can probably clean up the other profiles but as it is working I am leaving everything else alone. Thanks again
