Using Thunderbird 68.2 I get repeated login requests to use Google accounts
Occasionally with Thunderbird updates I'll need to reenter my Google account credentials to allow Thunderbird to access my Google email and calendar accounts (usually I need to do this for email and calendar separately). With the latest version (68.2) I had to remove the old Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar extensions and reinstalled them. Now each time I start Thunderbird I repeatedly get prompted to enter my Google credentials. I logged into my Google account and removed the previous permissions for Thunderbird and Provider for Google Calendar to access the account, but it does not appear to be reestablishing the authorization.

When I complete the login, and try to snooze the reminder again, I get the same login message. This can go on as long as i have patience.
Google authentication will be fixed in TB 68.2.1, or you can apply the workaround from here.

What is the authentication type on your gmail account, normal password or OAuth2? If it's the former, try the latter, and complete the authentication next time you connect to the account, when an authorization browser window should appear.
OAuth2 was enabled. While trying to set this up Google notified me of suspicious activity and stated:
Less secure app blocked Google blocked the app you were trying to use because it doesn't meet our security standards. Some apps and devices use less secure sign-in technology, which makes your account more vulnerable. You can turn off access for these apps, which we recommend, or turn on access if you want to use them despite the risks. Google will automatically turn this setting OFF if it's not being used.
So perhaps this new version of Thunderbird has been flagged as less secure?
There's something wrong with Google's OAuth process today. You can't add an account with OAuth, which normally doesn't depend on the less-secure setting. It's still possible to use normal password authentication, but 'less-secure apps' must be allowed.

Thanks for the update and workaround. I've spent too much time on it already so will probably wait patiently for the next update.
Update: I've just had a pop-up telling me download the latest version of Tbird, but the release notes seem to indicate that it is v68.2.0, which is what I have already! Any thoughts?
TB 68.2.1 is now available, so the notification is valid:

The release notes are there, yes. But updates to 68.2.1 have NOT yet been enabled. Coming real soon.

Hi Guys, still waiting patiently :-) I tried to download from the TB site, but it was offering 68.2.0 a couple of minutes ago. I'll keep checking, thanks.
OK, 68.2.1 now available and downloaded. I've also had to download Lightning and Provider again, but login to Google via my Gmail account is still failing, and so I can't synchronise my calendar. I can go through the Gmail login procedure successfully, and I get a window that says "Provider for Google Calendar wants to access your Google account". I click on "allow", and the window disappears, but my calendar is still blank.
Any ideas?

PS Now my address book has vanished! This becoming a real bind.

What caused you to do that? How were they presented in Addons Manager - enabled, disabled, missing?

i have 68.2.1, and it was not fixed. The solution (here) through config worked though ....

They were missing from 68.2.1. Incidentally, I still have 68.2.0 in my computer, which has my complete "All address book", but is missing my "personal address book", and several subfiles of addresses for a charity I work for. For all I know, I may still have files left over from 60.
Yes, I lost my addresses two years ago, and can't now remember how I recovered them (I'm in my 70s, and doing my best to keep up, but these upgrade downloads don't half give me grief). Thanks for trying to help.

I'm afraid neither 68.2.1 nor the config change have worked for me. even after deleting and reloading my Gmail account, and restarting TB 68.2.1. However, now when I click Synchronize on my Lightning calendar, I no longer get a Gmail login window - nothing happens at all, and I still have a blank calendar.
I see that Wayne is trying to Contact Google for a solution now.

Go to Tools->Options menu, select "Advanced" icon, select "General" tab, click "Config Editor" button,click "I accept the risk!", search for "general.useragent.compatMode.firefox" if it shows "false" double click to change to "true", enter your credentials one LAST time when it prompts. The repeating issue stopped for me. No idea why this works??
