As above also disabled in Config Still it searches from Address box. I use this excellent alternative Browser to get straight forward clarity, I do not want to go straight to Google or any other search engine.

This is posted from a 32 bit system where I have manged to stop searches from the address bar. It just brings up http://www.searchfusion.info/?z - Annoying but harmless and easily ignorded

Thank you for replying.

"What do I want to happen?" is that what I type in the address box, when the Search box is enabled, is only looked at by the DNS server. I do not want it to be looked at by a search engine.

However as Mozilla / Firefox is google sponsored and google is the internet in their view I can see that is not going to happen.

Thank for listing the actions I needed to take in Config. Keyword enabled was the one i had not thought of

If you type cats into the address bar and press Enter, what do you want to happen? This is the typical behavior:

(A) Autofill

If you have visited a site whose server name starts with cats, Firefox will show that in the address bar and pressing Enter will load it.

The preference for autofill is: browser.urlbar.autoFill

(B) Search

If autofill does not have any matches for cats, Firefox will show that it is sending the text to your default search engine when you press Enter.

The preference for searching from the address bar is: keyword.enabled

(C) Fixup

If autofill has no matches and search is disabled, Firefox will try http://www.cats.com/.

The preference for fixup is: browser.fixup.alternate.enabled

(D) DNS Lookup/Error

If not handled by autofill, search, or fixup, Firefox will do a DNS lookup for cats. Since this is unlikely to match any server, Firefox normally will show a Server not found error page. In the case you described where you have a dishonest DNS service, Firefox will resolve the address to the pay-per-click page offered by that service.

If you wanted to change any of those preferences from on (true) to off (false), you would do that on the about:config page. See: Configuration Editor for Firefox.
