Thunderbird 78.0b1 (32-bit) is rather slow to start running - often several seconds longer than previous versions.

Is it trying to use more than one virtual CPU core? I now have other programs using all but one of the virtual CPU cores on my computer.

Is it trying to use the GPU? I usually have other programs using the GPU heavily nearly all the time. If so, how can I tell Thunderbird to make little if any use of the GPU for anything other than displaying the current message?

I tried using Task Manager to observe what was happening during TB startup. It showed that CPU use reached 100% during the slow startups.

I then told the background programs to limit their CPU use to one virtual CPU core less than before. Now the startups are faster, but not quite as fast as I remember them. This is bearable, though.

By the way, I'm using 64-bit Windows 10, latest update.

Thunderbird has used the GPU for probably 8 or 10 years. Likewise many changes are being undertaken to make the program load faster, not slower. Disk contention with anti virus or backup /Syncing products are the most common causes of slowdowns.

It may be trying to make the program run faster, but it's actually starting up SLOWER now.

No recent changes in the antivirus program. This happens when backup is not running. No syncing product in use.

Is there a way I can tell it not to use some of the latest changes?

Also, I noticed that Firefox does not have a similar slowdown.

How slow are we talking? <>5,10,20,30 seconds?

Often 30 seconds or more.

Also, I just saw Firefox have a similar startup delay.

This is running it from an HDD, or SSD? Also, how long does it take in Windows safe mode? What about Tbird safe mode (in Windows normal mode)? Also, what about launching a new blank profile? Where's the location of the profile in use, local drive or network drive?

Program runs from an SSD. Windows 10 does also.

Where do I find information on how to reboot in Windows safe mode? When I rebooted, it did not give me any option to select safe mode.

Where do I find information on how to create a new blank profile?

Profile is on a local HDD. No network drives in use.

Now using Thunderbird 78.0b2 (32-bit), which has the same problem.

Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10

Start TB in safe mode by holding Shift when you launch it. The Lightning add-on can add time to startup, especially if you have several network calendars.

Help/Troubleshooting, click about:profiles to create and run profiles. Or, use Profile Manager.

I don't have the Lightning add-on installed.

So far, it looks like the testing gave some speedup with no sign of how. Hard to tell if it's now back to the speed before 78.0b1.

Startup time now increasing again.

I's beginning to look like time since the last Windows restart or reboot is a major factor in the slowdown. I often go days or weeks without a restart or reboot.
