Currently I have Eudora 7.1.0.9 on a Windows 7 computer. I’m getting a new computer with Windows 10. Since Eudora is no longer supported I’m looking to switch to Thunderbird 78 (which I gather is the latest version). Will Thunderbird 78 import all my Eudora 7.1.0.9 files? If it will, am I correct in assuming that I’d need to install Thunderbird 78 on my current Windows 7 computer and import the Eudora files to it? Then how do I transfer the new Thunderbird on my Windows 7 computer to my Windows 10 computer?

lets start backwards a bit.

install V3.1 on your old computer and use the import wizard to get your Eudora mail (there is no Eudora import anymore) Pick a language version here for 3.1 http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/3.1.19/win32/

Then install V60. it makes moving to a new machine simpler than later versions. Migrate to your new computer using V60 These instructions work well with V60 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer

Then install V68 Again profile changes are in the wings and it is considered a watershed upgrade point. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.9.0/ v68 as it makes some profile changes and should update you over a short period of time to the V78 version which is not "released" for update, only new install at this time.

Note that V78 has an inbuilt calendar, so unless you need it, I suggest you defer anything with lightning/Calendar to the V78 point as you will neatly sidestep any migration issues that come from the calendar integration step in V78

Thanks Matt

Another question. Once I import my Eudora files to Thunderbird 3.1 and then upgrade to V60 an then V68, will I still be able to leave Thunderbird unopened and open Eudora 7.1.0.9 on my old computer to read all my emails as I can right now or will the old emails be unreadable using my existing Eudora 7.1.0.9?

You said to go to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1298483 to get version 3.1. All I see there is a list of 40-50 lines starting with Dir. Which one do I click on? I'm in the US.

Where do I go download V60? I found https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/60.0/releasenotes/ but it says "Thunderbird version 60.0 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as upgrade from Thunderbird version 52 or earlier. A future version 60.1 will provide updates from earlier versions." So where do I go to download V60.1? I can't find anywhere to do so.

Also you stated "I suggest you defer anything with lightning/Calendar to the V78 point as you will neatly sidestep any migration issues that come from the calendar integration step in V78" Is there something I need to do to "defer anything with lightning/Calendar" or do I just not do something? I don't really want any calendar in my email program or is that needed to schedule sending an outgoing email some day in the future?
