How do I get my message preview pane to view in classic mode instead of the new "cartoon" mode?

I do not know of any "cartoon" mode, but you can press F8 on your keyboard to toggle the "preview" pane on and off.

You may prefer Classic View under View/Layout; press Alt if the Menu Bar with View is hidden.
