Dear Sirs;

Thunderbird just updated itself 78.6.1 to 78.7.0 and I was not able to send emails with 78.7.0.

So I reverted back to 78.6.0 and now I can send emails again.

I am using SMTP and my settings are:

Server Name: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Port: 587

Connection security: None

Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely

Username: XXXXXXXXXXXX

These settings have worked for me for years, and they work right now with 78.6.0.

But they don't work with 78.7.0.

When I tried to send emails with 78.7.0, I would receive messages like "server timed out" and "too many connections", etc.

The puzzling thing is that the messages went into the "Sent" folder, but they were NOT ACTUALLY SENT.

I verified this by attempting to send emails to one of my other email accounts.

Obviously this is a problem, if people see a message in the "Sent" folder that was not actually sent.

Anyway, I tried to find a place to report a bug, but apparently I don't have access to the bug report section these days.

So this will have to act as my bug report.

Thanks so much for everything and have a great day.

Robert

without knowing the server name there is no way to test your settings. but no connection security sounds wrong in this day and age. However the big issue is that the vast majority of issues following upgrades are the firewall components of anti virus products blocking this "unknown" program. Given you have experienced timeouts, that sounds a lot like your anti virus/firewall.

I'm using an email address for my small business dotcom, sortof customerservice@mysmallbusiness.com

Yes, I should be using better security, but I don't think that is causing this particular problem.

Regarding my firewall, I am using Windows (7) firewall, and I don't see any mention of Thunderbird in the "inbound rules", "outbound rules: etc.

I will admit that I'm not really knowledgeable about the firewall, but like I said earlier, my Thunderbird 78.6.0 works just fine.

Lets check that firewall. Go to Open the menu Fx57Menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information Scroll down to to the security software heading... what is reported there for the three categories.

So now you tell me your using your own domain. ALL the more reason to post the server name. Many of them are in fact not correctly configured at the server level and hosting companies like godaddy while being big are not necessarily good at email. Everything from the free domain providers that only offer one email address in a really backward way to those that have hosted servers and paying thousands a month.

Hi Matt,

Thanks so much for your help, but I think I'm going to just stick with Thunderbird 78.6.0 from here on out.

I don't see any advantage to "upgrading" if I'm going to have troubles like this.

I was just trying to make people aware that there was a problem with 78.7.0.

Cheers and have a great day.

Robert
