Cannot restore default theme.

I fiddled with themes and now all my tabs have different highlight colours. I've tried to restore to default but without success.

As I use multiple windows, I was hoping to have a different simple pastel highlight colour for each window, not for each tab. Otherwise how do I get back to the original default? The on-line instructions do not work.

Were you experimenting with different Firefox themes on the Add-ons page, or with userChrome.css "themes"?

If you were switching among Firefox themes on the Add-ons page, then I would expect Firefox to clean up any temporary display confusion the next time you close and reopen Firefox. It should apply whatever theme is selected to all of the windows.

Hi Jscher

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I tried closing all my Firefox windows and then rebooting my Windows 10. I'm still getting randomly coloured tabs and icon strips.

See attached.

How do I revert to simple uncoloured ones?

Wow, that's really strange. Do you have any color/tab-related add-ons? You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything that sounds like it could relate to tab colors, or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Any luck tracking it down?

Yes, there was an add-on called Vivaldi fox. I don't remember enabling it but now, having disabled it, the problem has gone. All tab backgrounds restored to a very pale grey. Thanks for your help

Perhaps you can help with part two of my problem. This all started because I wanted a way to identify different windows. One window with all tabs wrt photography and images, another window with all tabs wrt finance, etc. I thought if ALL the tabs of a particular window were highlighted in some way (like the colours I've now disabled) that would be a solution. Any suggestions?

I can't think of a straightforward, direct way to do that. I'm not even sure my immediate thought about a convoluted method would work. But setting that aside...

Firefox allows add-ons to set a window title preface. This appears when you are switching windows through the Taskbar, and if you enable the optional Title bar, it can appear on the top of the window itself. Here's the best know add-on for that if you want to give it a try:
