I carefully set up my mail list to view->sort by->received, view->sort by->ascending, view->sort by->grouped by sort. When I get the pop-up that requests Thunderbird wants to compact my folders (I think?) and I click on do it now (or something like that, this is from memory), my mail list is changed to date, descending, unthreaded (again from memory, but something like that). Most annoying. There are other operations that unexpectedly wipe out my mail list view settings, but I haven't isolated them yet. Feels like a bug to me.

Do you have an Anti virus scanning in your Thunderbird folder? Do you have any addon installed?

If the answer to either is yes, eliminate them as you can not claim to see a bug with either occurring.

Hi Matt, thanks for your fast reply. I performed the following steps:

  1. Through Thunderbird Add-ons Manager I disabled ImportXportTools NG, MyPhoneExplorer and Qnote, which were the only Add-ons I had.
  2. In Thunderbird Preferences I changed the "Compact all folders when it will save over" setting from 20 MB down to 1 MB so I wouldn't have to wait several days for the permission to compact folders pop-up.
  3. In Norton 360, I disabled Auto-Protect and set scans from Automatic to Manual so that Norton would not be interfering with Thunderbird.

Is this sufficient to isolate this problem to Thunderbird?

When I got the Permission to Compact Folders pop-up I clicked Compress and the problem still happens, the message list instantly changed from Grouped to Unthreaded. I was able to narrow down the effect some, checking menu->view->sort by drop down I found that where I had "Grouped by Sort" checked, the checkmark had changed to "Unthreaded". This was the only change I could see.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

I also have ImportXportTools NG

Tested: Inbox on pop account A Sort by > Date, Ascending, grouped by sort File > compact folders

Inbox on pop account B Sort by > Date, Descending, grouped by sort File > compact folders

Inbox on gmail IMAP Account C Sort by > Date, Ascending, grouped by sort File > compact folders

Sort and view remained as set up. I cannot reproduce loss of sort.

QNote 0.10.4 addon does create a column header. So that addon would have some connection with columns.

Try this test: make sure you have not selected that QNote column header, so it does not display.

To properly test you would need to uninstall that addon and restart Thunderbird.

Test: Set up the auto compact option in Preferences and also set to 2MB. Set up a folder : Inbox on pop account A Sort by > Date, Ascending, grouped by sort

Went through folder deleting a lot of old mail as it needed a clear down.

Auto compact popped up - selected to compact now. Result: Inbox on pop account A Sort by > Date, Ascending, unthreaded

Using the auto compact did produce the same as reporter. I can reproduce this. This just might be bug, but it only seems to occur if compacting from the popup auto compact dialog and not from the File menu nor Folder menu.

Note: did not test in SAfe Mode.

Toad Hall,

Thanks for your help.

In response to your first post, I was surprised to see that even though I disabled QNote, the QNote column remained and "QNote" was still an option in the column selection list. I uninstalled QNote, then stopped and restarted Thunderbird, and verified that the QNote column was gone. Then I retested and the sort by group problem still remains.

In response to your second post, thanks again. At least I know I didn't imagine it.

I'm quite new to Thunderbird (porting everything over from Outlook), so please have patience as I learn my way around.
