There is no way to make it permanent at present. Websites should be providing a mobile view to mobile devices, with a desktop view available purely as a backup just in case it does not work.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, blame the websites, even though other browsers have solved this problem. The "mobile" view works, but I generally like the desktop view better. A tablet is technically a mobile device, but I think most people regard it as being more like a desktop computer than like a cell phone.
