Once in a while I would like to email a company with a question or comment and I go to their website, click on an email link and thunderbird email pops up an it is useless. I use Gmail and literally half of the business world is out of reach do to the use of thunderbird. I do not want to use thunderbird I have to many "apps" to deal with already. Still it would be nice to be able to contact people at their chosen email.

What is the fix?

What you are clicking on is a mailto: link. Thunderbird is set in your operating system to be your default mail handler for those types of links. Uninstall it like I said and the prompt will go away. (at least the Thunderbird one will)

Or consult with your operating system provider. That would appear be canonical on how to set Gmail as the default mailhandler in Ubuntu.

I did a google search as I do not use ubuntu and found this. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1516803/set-gmail-as-default-email-client-ubuntu-22-24

and this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gmail

Fundamentally this is not the place to ask for support with your operating system. You are coosing to use a non mainstream operating system which has a fairly high expectation on the user to be able to research their own solutions. You might want to ask canonical as I said, or even Google as they supply the mail service.

My first reaction to that was "That is utter rubbish", based on my own experience which is anything but that. But then I figured there must be something that is making you think that, so like David I will ask you to provide specifics to substantiate that statement. However I will phrase it differently in the hope of getting a more complete response.

What makes you think folk using Thunderbird can not be contacted when you send them email from Gmail?

More to the point, why have you got Thunderbird set as your default mail client if you do not use it. Uninstall it. Then it will never pop up when you click a link.

OK more specifics. I went to Wral, at the bottom of the page in the contacts I clicked on the Seth Effron email link and the dreaded "sign up for thunderbird" box popped up. Don want to do that again and again so I write to this site to get advice on how to stop the thunderbird mail popup. You advised delete thunderbird mail. did that went back to Wral site now the email link does nothing.

Would you please post the exact URL of which you write? I still cannot envision what your issue is. Thank you.

Seth Effron is the opinion editor for this news station.

Added notes, generally when the dreaded thunderbird sign up popup appears I can copy the email address for the link and paste it in a gmail window to accomplish my taskbut in this case it is only a link with no email.
