I can drag and drop some existing email addresses from my address book into a new mailing group, but Firefox refuses to allow other email addresses to be dragged and dropped. It seems completely arbitrary as to which existing email accounts can be drag and dropped and which cannot. The online "HELP" instructions for this function are completely outdated, written for an earlier version of the software, and are no help at all. The whole process of creating a mailing group that has several (30-40 or more) existing email addresses in it is a giant task if one cannot drag and drop those into the group. It is as if whoever designed the mail group function did not expect anyone to set up anything but small groups. Please fix this function!! It's current usability is severely limited and a real pain to use.

A 'Mailing List' is a means of displaying a virtual list - like a tagged selection of contacts that currently display in the particular address book to which the Mailing List is a sub group. It means you can create several 'mailing lists' in that address book and have various contacts in various mailing lists. It also means a contact can appear in more than one mailing list. But the contact must be in the address book that has the mailing list.

Senario: 'Personal Address Book' has 100 contacts with email addresses and 10 contacts which only have address and other data but no email address. 'Personal Address Book' has a sub group - aka a 'Mailing List' which I'll call 'Sporty' IF contact is already in the 'Personal Address Book' AND has a valid email address, then you can drag and drop that contact into the 'Sporty' mailing list.

You can drag and drop contacts from one 'address book' to another 'address book'. eg: From 'My other address book' into 'Personal Address Book' Then you drag and drop into 'Sporty' if required because contact is now in the correct location.

You cannot drag and drop a contact direct from 'My other address book' and attempt to drop it directly into Mailing List called 'Sporty' because 'Sporty' is not a Mailing List associated with 'My other address book'.

re : the outdated Help Article:

It does say this: "If the contacts were not already in the associated address book, they will also be entered into the associated address book. "

That used to be the case many versions back. But in incorrect for recent versions eg: 128*

If you wish to follow it - there is a bug report requesting a fix on this:
