Can I specify a page to be opened when I click 'new tab' instead of the 'empty' tab?

When I open a new tab, I'd like to be able to specify what it opens, instead of the 'empty' tab.

There are a number of extensions that provide a feature like that. NewTabURL extension https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2221/

Thanks! Trying out TabMixPlus right now.

But was hoping it was a 'setting' in about:config that I could edit.
