First serious hassle with Firefox after using for a few years. How can I get my bookmarks from my old laptop (Win XP) into my new one with Win 7? Yeah, yeah, I found that profile, copied it, tried to paste it, etc., and got zilch. Right now what I believe is the copied profile folder with a nonsense name (a1lcau0z.default) is sitting on a thumb drive. I have no idea what is in the rest of this "profile"--all I want is my bookmarks!

If that old laptop still works you can export your bookmarks in HTML format and then import that file into the new laptop.

Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Export HTML...
then
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... - from an HTML file

You can copy the data manually by copying the contents of the profile folder, for details see Profile backup - MozillaZine Knowledge Base or Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. If you just want the bookmarks, copy the places.sqlite file from that old profile to your current profile folder.

There are some add-ons and utilities that can make this process easier. The first one is the FEBE add-on which can be used to copy a profile. Another option is the free MozBackup utility.
