Why is FireFox auto-entering and overwriting my entry in a field when deactivated?

I have cleared the history and believe I have deactivated the auto-entry. However, when I try to type in a field with say... "apples," Firefox will simply put in "bananas" as soon as I type "a."

The only way to type in "apples" in the entry area is if I let it insert "bananas" and then type "apples" following it so the result is "bananasapples" and then go back and delete the "bananas."

What gives and how can I kill this behaviour?

What "field"? On a web page? Or in Firefox? Please provide some specifics.
