I cannot download new programmes - it just saves a file on it? Please tell me how to download it properly

Downloading a program with Firefox and installing that program are two separate actions with Firefox. IE allows the user to combine them.
Thank you. I signed-in to find the other half of the reply to my question and their wasnt any more... I still don't know what to do and have not been able to find any information regarding installing programmes in Firefox. The instructions ask whether to save the file or not - that's all - nothing further seems to be available to know what to do next.
