After Firefox was updated from 3.6.16 it would not properly start. Firefox.exe would start as a process and begin loading up to the 3x,xxx range. Then it would do nothing but constantly take 25% of the CPU(Quad Core so only 1/4th can be used by a single core program). The Firefox window would never show up and I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox with the full version several times hoping it was just a file or two being misplaced but it did not help. The system itself is sufficiently powerful enough to use Firefox 4 completely and my other systems properly updated so it might be isolated.

Did you remove your personal settings when you uninstalled and reinstalled the browser? Occasionally the reason why the browser will not start is because of an add-on. I would suggest you try and start Firefox using Safe Mode and disable add-ons. Please take a look at this page Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode and follow the instructions under "How to start Firefox in Safe Mode" and report your results back here.

Safe mode will show the permanent changes box but after selecting any of the options and doing temporary or permanent changes it will hang in the high 4x,xxx. The problem is not in the settings but in the browser.

When doing reinstall of the browser destroying the settings was not an option and still isn't.

It is a glitch in the update procedures of Firefox 4. I just figured I would downgrade back to 3.6.16 and after I did that it worked. I will probably wait until a new version of 4 is released. For some reason it keeps freezing on the add-on updates.
