Ever since Firefox updated, when I type something in the main bar (not the little search bar) it automatically sends me to aol search. I want it to defaut to Google instead, but I cannot figure out how to do that. Any suggestions?
I have changed the default to Google on the smaller search bar, but I keep forgetting and entering searches in the big bar instead. Aol steals its searches from Google anyway, so I'd just as soon go there first. Besides, I have lingering antipathy towards aol.

You may well have some AOL related software installed, also who is your ISP, are you using AOL ?
It should be easy enough to return the search feature of the location bar, but that may not remain if you have some malware or even ordinary plugin that changes the situation.
Have a look at What to do when searches take you to the wrong search website
I am certainly *not* using aol. I followed your link and checked the settings and they appear to still be in default mode which should be Google, but it is still defaulting to aol. I have checked for plugins and extensions and can't find any that reference aol. Any other ideas?
You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use a Google Lucky search.
Um, yeah, that's what I tried after the last guy's suggestion. No luck.
