Prior to updating Firefox, clicking on a link in my various applications (e.g.: MS Office 2000, Secure Shell) would trigger the opening of Firefox and displaying the website.

After the upgrade process, Firefox does not open. It is necessary to , Open Firefox and paste in the URL.

Are you using Firefox 4.0.1? Your system details show you to be running 3.6.3 which makes your comment about upgrading sound a bit odd (?).

If you are still using 3.6.3, click Help | Check For Updates a.s.a.p. because there was a security breach at Comodo which is an SSL certificate provider recently whereby a number of fraudulent certificates were inadvertently issued. These allow a hacker to impersonate any site including online banking and the Firefox version you're running at the moment will not warn you that the site is a fake. The fraudulent certificates were blacklisted in v3.6.17 and beyond.

But assuming 4.0.1, click the Firefox button, go to Options | Options | Advanced and in the General tab, checkmark "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup" and then click the Check Now button.

On earlier versions, the menu path is via Tools | Options | Advanced.

My 'upgrade' was from 3.0.5 to 3.6.3 . This upgrade to 4.0.1 seems to have negated some of my AVG and ZoneAlarm protection! I generally avoid the 'bleeding edge' of latest upgrades.

YES this did 'magically' solve my initial problem. Links in various applications, now open Firefox as expected.

I may be forced to upgrade AVG and ZoneAlarm to regain those protections.

Thank you for your help!

You're welcome.

Avast AV is a good alternative to AVG. See http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

I refreshed my Free AVG 9 and ran a scan. This 'fixed' Firefox 4.0.1 to reinstate the AVG protections.

Again, thank you.
