On opening Firefox after a short interval, I found the the text size had increased and the text had moved to the right so that half of it was inaccessible. Using the 'full screen' control brought the text back to centre screen but the tool bar, lower part of the text and the scroll bars were not visible. I have tried shutting down and restarting and using 'System restore' with no effect.

Sounds like your problem is simply to reset the zoom iwth Ctrl+0 (zero), changes are remembered per site.

You can move and resize your window with "Alt+SpaceBar" which is a Windows keyboard shortcut.

You can change your window size with JavaScript code, entered directly into the location bar ("Ctrl+L") or with a bookmarklet (preferably a keyword bookmarklet)

If you have the Babylon extension, disable it -- large white area.

Check the screen resolution. It should be 1056x650 or very close. Look in Control Panel.
