Whenever I turn on my computer, which came with Windows 7 pre-loaded, I get a message to click on updates. I never use Explorer, only Firefox, for internet access, so is there any harm in declining the Windows updates? I have McAfee protection - do I need to update Windows also to be secure?

Updating Windows won't do you any harm. Infact it can be beneficial to you since windows keeps releasing Security Updates and other Functionality Updates of the Microsoft Programs you use on your computer.

However you will need to "Allow Internet Access to Firefox" in Windows Firewall and other Security Apps.
