updating firefox
I'm currently running firefox 3.6.23. When i check for updates it says none are available. Do I have to update manually to get to version 7?

The update from the 3.6 version to the latest 7.0.1 version hasn't been turned on yet. It was supposed to happen today, but due to problems with the Sync server it has been postponed. It may happen nest week, Or you can download the latest version and install it yourself, as mha007 mentioned.

The update is working. it's just telling me there are no new updates. So do I have to update it manually?

So if I download the latest version does it overwrite my old version? What happens to my bookmarks?
Yes the new version will be installed on top of your previous Firefox installation. And your bookmarks and other data are automatically loaded in the new Firefox installation.
You can also Backup your Profile to make sure that your Bookmarks and other data are not lost in the new Installation (although that doesn't happens)
Check and tell if its working.

Your settings like Bookmarks are not in the program folder but in a safe place. https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles
Actually the offer to 3.6.* users to update to Firefox 7.0.1 was supposed to happen on October 6 but as said it has been postponed.
Since the Major update would be a full update and also bigger download than the Firefox 7.0.1 setup (due to not be compressed by 7zip) you might as well download Firefox 7.0.1 anyways.

The prompt is opt-in...if users decline, they stay on 3.6.x and get security updates until the next time we decide to prompt
