What is the number that sometimes appears in a tab, like (4) Facebook?
It only seems to appear a small portion of the time, usually with the Facebook site, but occasionally with others.
I know this is a retro question, but is there an online "manual" that describes the Firefox interface in excruciating detail?

Sounds like a feature added by an extension
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
