Firefox was installed in my computer by a semi-pro friend and the icon is on the taskbar. When I click the icon to open Firefox, it goes directly to the Google site automatically. Why does that happen? And how can I change settings so that it opens Firefox??

Did you try the about:home page as the start page if you prefer a page with a search bar?

You can use the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar to do searches if you do not have a (home) page open like the about:home page that has its own search bar.

Hello Weaver15,

I believe Google.com is currently your homepage, and when you restart Firefox, you always go to your homepage. Firefox has long since had session restore automatically, if you enable it.

To do that, please click on the Firefox App Tab,(For Firefox 4 or higher, with AppTab, the orange button at the top left corner of the window), then go to Options, then Options. Then go to the General Tab, and under Startup, in the box beside "When Firefox starts:" set "Show my windows and tabs from last time," by clicking on the white box. If you want to change your homepage(the page that is shown every time you start a new session), change your Homepage(it's under the Startup section as well) to whatever you like. Click Okay.

For Firefox 3 or higher with menus, go to the Tool menu>>Options(Sometimes it may say Preferences). Click Okay.

If you have Firefox BonEcho(v2) or lower, please go to the Edit menu>>Preferences. Click Okay.

Hope that helps! Reply if you don't understand, or need further guidance.

Kind Regards, Aaron.

Maybe your friend changed the default Firefox homepage which is about:home to Google.com .

It's real easy to set whatever you want as your own homepage.

Thanks Edmeister and Aaron.... you were right!!!! Google had been set as my home page. I followed your directions and succeeded in entering Firefox as home page. However..... when I go to Firefox now, it says Firefox on the page with its big logo but the line below it for entering the search subject says Google________search. Is that the way it's supposed to be? (I used to think Google Rocks. Now I think it is Google Fell.) It's awful... they have removed the ability to disable AutoSuggest which is another annoying problem.

You can set any page as the home page.

The about:home page that current Firefox versions use is a simple build-in home page that uses Google to do searches, but doesn't require internet access to load, so it is quick.

You can select a blank page to open when you start Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts":
    • "Show my home page"
    • "Show a blank page"
    • "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

Thanks co-rel... that's another important bit of info. (In error, btw, I clicked your answer as being the solution I chose... it isn't but it's a big help.) Now I understand that Google is supposed to be there. But I am totally new to Firefox and when I clicked Blank Page I got, literally, a Blank Page with no place visible to me to enter my search question. What did I miss. Perhaps Firefox doesn't have a Search line of its own in the middle of the page. Is there another search engine that might even be better than Firefox? or Google? Thanks loads.
