I organise my Bookmarks in about 7 or 8 folders. After upgrading to Firefox v10 a few days ago, I find that the Folders are still listed but will not expand. When I open the Bookmarks library and select a folder, it lists the description of the sites but no URLs. I have tried to restore Bookmarks from before upgrading but I get message 'Unable to Process the Backup File'. Fortunately, I also store my Bookmarks in MS OneNote, but I don't want want to re-create them if I'm likely to lose them again. I also have Norton Toolbar installed.

Taking a belts and braces approach lets first of all make sure that you have everything backed up. Having multiple copies is the best way to ensure you have the relevant and latest ones available.

  • make manual backups of existing bookmarks, and do this BEFORE and after any restore attempts, be aware that restores overwrite existing bookmmarks
  • make a copy of your profile and put it somewhere safe, outside firefox program and profile paths (Windows desktop is a suitable location) include all sub folders and files (it includes backup copies of bookmarks and the bookmarks database itself)

I have not personally noticed any reported problems specific to Firefox 10 updates that cause problems with bookmarks. Maybe some extension you have is interfering, but whatever the cause you could now have corrupt or old bookmarks installed. if it was a one-of problem you may be ok restoring your bookarks, but if a problem persists you will need to investigate further. If you continue with making say daily manual backups you know the worse case is that you loose only a part of a days bookmarking.

Many thanks, John99. After finding I could neither add, edit or remove bookmarks I decided to download v10 setup again, then uninstall and install the saved setup file. Previously I had not saved, but only ran the file. The new clean install is working perfectly, and I have re-entered my important bookmarks which I also save in MS OneNote. I have taken your advicc and setup a daily backup schedule, so that I keep the last 7days profiles on an external hdd. Thanks again. IsaanDave.

Glad you sorted it out, thanks for posting back.

Firefox does; as you realise, keep snapshot backups of a number of days bookmarks, the problem is they are within the Firefox Profile, and there are some circumstances whereby those bookmarks may be vulnerable to loss or corruption.
