I've updated to Firefox 11 and now I can't open online pdf's. This has happened on more than 1 computer, using both OS 10.6.8 and OS 7.0 and on more than one website. I tried unchecking "block pop-ups" under preferences but that didn't help. When I use Safari to open the same pdf's, they open up fine. Everything worked fine with my Firefox until I did the upgrade.

I'd prefer to continue to use Firefox, but I can't figure out the root of the problem.

Has anyone else had this happen as well?

Thanks, gents, for figuring out a "fix" for this peculiar Firefox behavior. It is truly curious that although the screen is blank, you can indeed Save the phantom .pdf and then open the saved file to view it. What is amazing to me is that this issue doesn't seem to be making it to the Mozilla hit parade of currently experienced problems. Not everyone is going to be willing to do an extended research project rather than jump ship to Safari, etc.

I found a recommendation in another thread:

If using a Mac, go to the Firefox Plugins and disable the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.3. This is a recent plugin update, and as soon as it was installed I noticed that PDFs wouldn't download.

I had the same problem, and the fix above takes care of it by making Firefox treat the PDF link as a download. It works great...

...but before I came to this thread and found the fix, I discovered that even though my PDF link gave me a blank Firefox screen, using "SavePageAs" would save the PDF file just fine anyhow. So the file is there - but it's just not displayed.

I tried all of the above and in the referenced link. I was able to repair downloads for most links. But I still have trouble with a few pdf links on webpages. However, I did find that I can download those files by holding <control> and clicking on the link. Then I download using "download link as..."

Thanks much. This has been really REALLY irritating w/ TurboTax & online banking. Much appreciated. Why is that add on even there? I'll see if it negatively affects anything else, but it just breaks pop-up PDF viewing in Firefox 11.0

I'm a Mac/OSX 10.7 user and web designer/developer. I removed the NPAPI plugin and downloaded PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4. This plugin works fine - they nag for you to purchase but thankfully do give a free "for personal use" option.

FireFox developers seem more willing to disable functionality for security reasons rather than find and implement alternatives that provide security but also maintain functionality. Sadly, after years of being a FireFox fan, I am inches away from permanently removing FireFox form my system and using the far more reliable Safari and Chrome browsers.
