CPU spikes out of control because of Firefox. I just read text pages (documentation), all computer is running at 2% cpu, and from time to time firefox uses 100% CPU for 10 - 15 s. Very unpleasant. Cooler becomes noisy, I check Task Manager to see what happens ... This takes place every 10 minutes, I would say.

Add-ons: Adblock Plus, default options, doing its job. DownloadThemAll! - default options, very rarely used. Firebug - inactive for all sites. Flashblock - default options, doing its job. Session Manager - not used (no autosave, nothing).

Plugins: Adobe Acrobat. Java Deployment Toolkit. Java Platform SE. Shockwave Flash. Shockwave for Director (it keeps enabling itself). Windows Media Player Plug-in DLL.

All up to date.

OK I got rid of the creepy Shockwave for Director (from Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Shockwave > Remove). I shall see now. I also got rid of Windows Media Player Plug-in, using https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-issues-with-plugins-fix-problems?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Troubleshooting+plugins#w_manually-uninstalling-a-plugin

It did not happen again. Now I worry about security, since Shockwave apparently was not secure because it was not up to date. I remember that I disabled it, but it was enabled. Also, it did not automatically check for updates like addons do.

You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Thank you for your answer. I believe that the cause was one of those two plugins which I never used ...
