File is automatically downloaded when "open with" option is used

When i download a file (let's say a pdf), i get the "open with" and "save" options. But when i select open with acrobat reader option, the file does open with acrobat reader but at the same time it is automatically downloaded to "Downloads" folder. I am using firefox 14 on mac os x. On windows, when you use open with option, the file is downloaded to a temporary folder. I dont know whether it is the mac os x problem or i am really missing something in the firefox settings here.

Try to set the Boolean pref browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit to true on the about:config page.

i could not find browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit in the list ..

then as cor-el said, set/create it : right-click anywhere in the list of preferences and in the context menu, select New then select Boolean, type browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit and make it True.

I have tried to add this option, exactly the way u explained, but it didn't solve the issue :(

That pref setting should only remove the file automatically, but it won't prevent the temp file from being created.
