I thought I read that FF new behaviour was to update automatically, frequently, BUT it will ASK YOU FIRST if it finds an existing Addon that would be incompatible & deleted IF one proceeded with the Update.

I use very few Addins. Last week, FF updated without my asking, and DELETED my valuable 'Freecorder 4' without first warning that it will NOT update the Addin at same time as updating FF.

That was very annoying as without notice, I am now without Freecorder. Is that normal ?

Two further questions;

1 I was only seeking a standalone 'Recorder' that Records ALL audio currently playing, and has simple Start/Stop recording, and adjustable bitrate. But 'Freecorder' installs as a browser 'Adding' and inserted an overly large toolbar, which I would rather not have. What I like about Freecorder is it records to MP3 with adjustable bitrates, not wasteful wav, and it makes good recordings, not wasting filespace during silent periods.

Does anyone know if there is a similar free product that doesn't require a browser to launch it ?

2 While googling to see if anyone else had above problem just now, I read an item saying Freecorder was suspected to have Adware, and reported back to Applian. Does anyone know if this is true, and if there is a fix to prent this behaviour ? (I use AVG & Spybot)

Does anybody have any answers to this question ?

hello, the most commonly recommended free & open source program to record audio would probably be Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

i don't know the program you've mentioned, so i cannot answer your second question, but if you don't feel comfortable using it I'd recommend uninstalling it...

Can Audacity record everything on the 'souncard' input & output ?

Looked at your link thanks, which I see refers to using 'Freecorder 3' (it is an old version, 1 before the V4 I installed a few years back) to augment Audacity

I think my previous reply maybe not sufficiently detailed. The beauty of Freecorder was it records (think in mono) simultaneously the streaming audio of both input and output audio channels that pass through the 'soundcard'. i.e can record a Skype or other Voip call. I didn't see that in the Audacity list of features.

Since my first post, googling 'freecorder review' did bring up in cnet.com lots of very worrying user reviews e.g. "Malware - Avoid This!", and that subesquent versions of Freecorder (currently V7) are worse.
