I'm getting update to Firefox 20.0 but not automatically connecting to server, just hangs. Why? 19.0.2 says it's 'release' update channel: what's this?
Alert regularly appears prompting me to update to 20.0 but it won't connect to the server - although I have no problem with the modem at any other time. It just hangs there. I thought Firefox automatically updates. I have re-loaded, as advised but still have 19.0.2. About message states I am currently on the 'release update' channel. What does this mean? Do I need an update? Why?

'release update' means you are using the stable release version of the Mozilla Firefox.
Have you tried resetting firefox and then running update to see if it shows you are at the latest version? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems
