I click on a link to a text/plain file and firefox prompts me to save it or open using someother application. Why can't it just display the file? Automatically.

Are you sure that this is a text/plain file?

Firefox should open a file send with this MIME type in a tab and not show the open with download dialog.

Try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
